The work shown here is from Cline's "Innocence" series, a collection of works that revolve around the silhouette of a young child. As with all the other works from this series, the child is awkwardly posed, elbows are drawn upwards so the forearms dangle, and the feet turned inwards, as if pigeon-toed. "innocence in White," has unique characteristics, however, as the silhouette is painted in a stark, chalk white, thinly applied so streaks of black paint peak through the body. The anonymous body lays out over a bed of faces–stamped images appropriated from various artworks, magazines, and illustrated materials. Interspersed throughout the faces are tiny red handprints, each one scattered around the silhouette. The white figure and the bed of faces are then enclosed in an ovoid shape, reminiscent of a coffin or container. The novel shape is lined on the outside with additional stamped images of a head being devoured by a sharp-toothed creature. The disembodied head peaks out between the teeth as they seem to be swallowed. The muted color palette and rather sinister imagery give the work an overall dark message. Much of the work seems to refer to death and loss, with blood-like red hand-prints and numerous heads without bodies. The child's body at the center is even given this hollow and lifeless air. Although white is often attached to notions of purity, it seems that Cline has attached to it sentiments of emptiness.
