John Calder came to the Oxford Literary Festival in 2009 to talk about being a life long publisher and literary agent. He was a friend of Samuel Beckett, becoming the main publisher of his prose texts in Britain after the success of Waiting for Godot on the London stage in 1955-56. During the 1950's Calder published the translated work of Anton Chekov, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Zola. In 2002 John Calder opened the Calder Bookshop Theatre at 51 The Cut, Waterloo, London to celebrate his 50 years in publishing. This charcoal portrait was done before he gave his talk about his life times work as a publisher. I went to the talk and it was very interesting.

I have been painting and drawing for over 35 years. I have done this in eight countries. Hillary Clinton has one of my Afghanistan portraits of a woman, where I lived for three and a half years. I have two books published for the British Museum, Shakespeare & Friends which features portraits of major British writers which I did at Hay on Wye Literary Festival and the Oxford Literary Festival. The other book Afghanistan Portraits is a collection of charcoal portraits drawn across the country, many in remote villages many miles from Kabul. I was Artist in Residence at 10 Downing St from 2006-2007 while Tony Blair was Prime Minister.
