Art Description

Drawing: Ballpoint Pen, Paint and Marker on Paper.

Selina Scerri’ s new collection - When girls Undress- is inspired by the surroundings and various memorabilia the artist has encountered trough out her residency at the studio at City Lights Valletta Malta.. This collection explores censorship and appropriation in relation to a work of art as it explores the sex industry . The collection sees Selina transfer her painting and drawing skills directly on Vintage Erotica Cinema Posters which are part of the rich history of Citylights Cinema poster collection .

Echoing her interest in graffiti and kitsch the work sees the over eroticised images of adult movie stars being transformed into something more innocent and holy. The works in the collection aim to give dignity trough beautification , whilst at the same time questioning social identification which is a reflection of how certain posters in the collection had been hand retouched by the cinema’s staff with paint or markers in order to meet censorship standards and rules throughout the history of the cinema.
