I draw Hanok which is Korean traditional house and write Hangul which is Korean word with ink and water. It’s been almost 7 years since I started drawing and writing thoroughly to heal myself and I feel growing up as I keep working on it. I think Hanok and Hangul are the most significant cultural aspects that represent Korean identity. They have taught me how to live a life that suits me and allowed me find myself. As a Korean, it is natural for me to interpret Korean stories and I’m always grateful to work with familiar elements.   Through my works, I portray the beauty of emptiness and importance of simplicity. I believe there are nuances that can not be conveyed through the excessive use of technique or colors. I implement the negative spaces as many as possible so that they can control within composition on the canvas freely. I also attempt to show the beauty of Korea by juxtaposing Hanok and Hangul with delicate lines, natural smudges and neat calligraphy. I contemplate finding balance within the tension between precision and ambiguity which I think is the foundation of traditional Korean art.   Therefore, I strive to represent honesty and moderation, and it is not only an artwork but also an artist who communicates with the works frequently. Hanoks inspire and fascinate me first, then I start painting in the most comfortable way I can. Now this is my life and I’m used to this pattern of life. Whenever I meet people who are impressed by my works, I feel we are connected. I would love to help people appreciate the aesthetic of Korea through my works and I’ll keep listening what my works and my mind are telling me as I grow.
