Michel Smekens is born on 1963 march 6th in Ottignies in Belgium. During his young time he was living in Germany for his 6 first years, then he came back to Belgium with his parents and now, since 2015, he's living in France, Normandy in Saint-Germain-du-Corbéis near Alençon. Michel Smekens draws for a long time. After a university education in Political sciences and in International law as well as studies in Marketing, he completes its artistic formation in Slac Academie in the School of Fine Arts of Leuven and creates a meaning and very reactive art with regard to the society in which we live by wondering about the position of the individual as well as about his perception. Three years after its first exhibition, he was already exposed to the Palace of the Fine arts of Brussels from 2008 with its drawing « ik wil, je veux ». Since then, it is the contemporary and expressionist art which he develops permanently in passing of a black drawing in the color brilliantly through a mixed technique allying drawing blind, colors and performances. So, he creates according to its inspiration in the charcoal, in the India ink, in the watercolor and any material he can get his hands on. The artistic declaration of Michel Smekens "Since its earliest childhood, the drawing is a passion. Michel already drew inthe margin of his exercise books of school and in syllabus during his university program. Much more than an Art, it is the best expression of a perception, a behavior and becomes a language of communication. On the paper sheet mix will have of the model, the feelings and the thoughts which clears the human figure. So the unconscious often lets appear in its works its feelings, its wishes and the deepest desires. A drawing, always unique, appears then through a fast sketch, but sometimes also in an in-depth study. Very often he has to return with strength and speed the sensation of moment. And, with only a scrap of paper and a piece of charcoal is born a fascinating drawing. He also advances in more thorough studies, but always speed and beauty stay at the heart of its artistic thoughts. After nine years in the workshops of drawing of Marc Horemans, Marc Raes and Luc Huysman to the Academy of Arts SLAC to Leuven and at Wisper, of a linear drawing, he evolved towards more graphic techniques, via some essays of color, but always this search for the drawn line stays sound eternal collects.
