About The Artwork

The Landscape Enigma series of works on Arches paper has been ongoing for 20 years. This environment of black and white and gray is where experiments in concept, iconography and structure can be made directly without the emotional tide of color. These freely inform my larger oil paintings. I make paintings about the Earth, the deep past and the vast future on our planet. I make paintings about the difference between Objective Reality and Subjective Reality. —WL "Life is an illusion. I am held together in the nothingness by art." —Anselm Kiefer

William Leidenthal grew up in Palo Alto, California. He has been painting since the age of five. William has traveled extensively in Europe and the South Pacific. He now lives in Marin County (San Francisco Bay Area), California. "I make paintings about the Earth, about why our planet is the way it is—paintings about physics and chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, etc. I make paintings about what was here before humans and what will be here after. I try to create provocative work about things that exist but cannot be seen, what is here with us in this cosmos that we don’t know and cannot understand. I do not make pictures for decoration. I make experiments in paint. "Almost anything you do will seem insignificant, but it is very important that you do it." —Gandhi
