Russell Steinert was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up on Boston's North Shore in Manchester-by-the-Sea. He attended Brown University where he began making visual art largely about family summer trips to France where his father was born and raised. After college, he moved to Oakland, California to attend U.C. Berkeley's M.F.A program exhibiting his early work at San Francisco's Gallery Paule Anglim. In 1985, after a summer at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Maine, Russell moved to New York City, working in New York's art world for many years. He was part of the first wave of young visual artists moving to Brooklyn's Greenpoint/Williamsburg area and remains an active participant in that area's early and ongoing development as a vibrant center for art and design.
