Q: What/who inspired the work? A: All of my work is born out of curiosity, in the world at large but also in its minutiae. It's a discipline to make something daily and because, for me, that 'something is pictures (drawing, painting, collage, photrography) then I'm drawn to pictures-the history of art on a large epic arc but also the history of photography as a 'folk' medium. A shorter answer is I am inspired by the ghosts which are distilled in discarded snapshots. Q: What do you hope its viewers will feel/think? A: Especially in the present moment I see the generation of visual art as an alternative to obsessing over the news. That's for me on my end; to look away, for sustained periods, from my phone and the rabbit hole of the internet and simply draw or paint for hours. On the other end, for viewers, I see the work as alternative thing to consider; something pleasing as a relief from the miasma that is our current news cycle. I hope they will think about the compression of time that went into drawing this, the suspension of time within the frame of what is depicted and the bigger picture of time which stretches out for millennia in many directions/dimensions beyond this present moment. Q: Why did you choose the medium, subject matter, style? A: this was drawn with a mechanical pencil, an eraser shield, a tortillion, a ruler and a kneaded eraser in a Moleskin sketchbook. I choose these tools for their portability; everything fits in the marsupial pocket of the Moleskin. I draw in airports, airplanes, cafes, bars, trains (part of this drawing was made at a college basketball game at Madison Square Garden...) The subject matter is the photo reference I've tacked onto the opposite page using little rolled up dots of kneaded eraser not adhere the pic in place. To clarify, the photo ref is really the object matter and even the the entity within the photo remains the object observed because the subject is subjective. For instance, the depiction of a bed may not be the subject of the picture, the subject might not be the intended subject. The subject may be dreams or sex or death. In this case we have a baby on a lawn but the subject may be ephemerality, Americana, fleeting time or maternity... The style is impressionistic in that I aim to suggest rather than describe. Its mimetic enough for recognition to act as representation but the mission is gestural, sketchy and moving.
