Lion and hare In one forest, animals often gathered. And each time a lion appeared among them; the lion invariably abducted one of the animals and immediately devoured it. The unfortunate beasts were in constant fear. Then one day they gathered and began to confer: what to do, how to get rid of this eternal fear? They judged for a long time, dressed for a long time, and finally decided to pay the lion a life tribute and to pay him this tribute themselves, but in return to ask him not to scare them every day. They went and reported to the lion about their decision. Leo agreed, provided that the tribute would be delivered to him without delay, exactly at the appointed time. “But no — I'll kill everyone!” - he said. So the animals daily brought to the lion one of their own. Then the turn came to the hare, they gathered to carry him to the lion for eating. “Well,” said the hare, “nothing can be done, since it’s my turn.” Just let me go alone, I’ll go myself, I’ll try to get rid of the lion, maybe I will be able to save myself and save you from heavy torment. The animals laughed: “Look how this cowardly oblique hare boasted! The lion was very hungry, and the hare was deliberately late. Flashing his eyes and grinding his teeth, the lion was waiting for the next victim and was about to run away to deal with all the animals, when a hare appeared. Leo looked at him menacingly and asked: - How dare you be so late ?! “Great sovereign,” said the hare meekly, “I was ordered to bring a hare to you, I led him, but the other lion attacked us dearly, grabbed that hare and dragged him into a deep ravine.” - Well, show me it! The lion growled. The hare brought him to one well and said: - Here, sovereign, here he is, only I am afraid to look there alone, take me in my arms, and I will show you. The lion took the hare in its clutches, and they looked into the well. In the water, at the bottom of the well, their reflection appeared: a lion held a hare in its clutches and looked upwards. The angry lion threw the hare aside and rushed into the well to punish the opponent and rob him of his prey, but the water in the well was deep and the formidable lion drowned. The animals learned about it and rejoiced that they had got rid of the fierce enemy. And the hare was thanked warmly.
