About The Artwork

"Manthan" (मंथन) is an original pen and ink drawing on Paper of A3 size. It is made of free flowing, freehand lines and dots with pen and ink. This series of my drawings start during moments of confusion and introspection. As the shapes and forms emerge, the mental state shifts from chaos and confusion to calmness and clarity. This is a non-figurative, non-objective, abstract art. The process of creating this was in a state of flow, and the flow visually created by the lines can be seen in the artwork. It started with drawing random freehand curved and circular lines using a black pen and adding further smaller repetitive lines and dots. No pencil drawing or pre-planning was done. I enjoy drawing with freehand, free-flowing lines with pen, pencil or marker, to ultimately achieve some kind of rhythm. The uninhibited lines and freehand action together create a story in the end. Every mark created leads to the next one, and the next and a story is created as the lines keep getting added. Six drawings from a series of my line drawings were published in my poetry collection, along with the six section headings in the book published in 2015. This is one of the drawings for the section "Manthan" (मंथन). The literal meaning of the Hindi word "Manthan" (मंथन) is "Churning" and this section of my book "Parag our Pankhudiyan" had poems that related to the conflicts and churning within. I continue to work on the lines series.

I am professionally a Designer, an Artist at heart and Writer for the soul. I draw and paint intuitively and spontaneously, moving from chaos and void to order, balance and rhythm. I go with the flow, painting only something that I connect to, relate to, or something that comes from deep within. For me, art is like meditation and music. It blocks out all negativities and pressures, putting me in a state of “flow” (as stated by Mihaly). I love to create using lines and bright, bold colours, often combining them. After I won a state level award in 1997 for “After Study”, a collage which was made using kite paper, a keen interest in collage and mixed media was ignited within me. I like to work with mixed media and work with the “collage feel” even while painting. While working as a Designer for many years, I frequently worked with lines and dots. I enjoy drawing freehand, where every freehand action, every mark created, leads to the next one, and next, creating a poetry with lines, a story in rhythm. The bright, vibrant colours and free-flowing lines and figures of Mithila/Madhubani painting also inspire me. To me, art is an expression of the self, communicating with the viewer though the underlying meaning that depends on the viewer, the audience and the interpreter. Knowingly or unknowingly, art has an impact on minds and societies, influences not only the creator of the work of art, but also the viewer. Originally an Artist-Designer from India, I reside in Greater Atlanta Area, GA, USA. I started my career as a designer in the fashion and apparel industry in India. After my experience in the industry, I joined fashion/apparel design institutes and taught drawing, illustration, knitwear, fashion, art and design related courses at graduate and postgraduate level, while pursuing my passion for art. A state level award winning art student, visual art remains my first and foremost passion.
