Drawing: Graphite, Pencil on Paper.
The subject is a section of sun-bleached driftwood.
The background is an exploration of texture.
I love the notion of creating textures spaces that appear to be defined by the materials, substrate, and technique, but are in fact a result of many hours of careful, applied intent.
Such practice usually destroys energy and movement. I am aiming to retain this energy despite the amount of applied effort in creating an area of tone and texture.
This background remains alive - there is movement that, for me, is not entirely comfortable. Only the stick anchors this image, removing it from being little more than an exercise.
