About The Artwork

This is a portrait of Mrs, Walters, a Basenji, who is usually referred to as 'Bunky' for some unknowable reason. In any case, she doesn't really answer to either name if she's not in the mood. The drawing was made using ink and steel pen with gouache on Saunders Waterford Watercolor paper, cold press - 90 lb. This is a textured paper with a slight cream tone, not a true white. This drawing has four clean cut edges. She is indeed playing in this picture.

Betsy has compulsively drawn and painted her entire life. Her wide range of influences include Hieronymus Bosch, Henry Darger, pictorial lace and microscopic organisms. Using the flowing splatters of ink and paint as a starting point she draws what she sees in the underpainted surface. She builds her work through this pareidolic method until the creatures and their activities are fully realized. She prefers the work to instruct her to its needs rather than force a latent image into being. She is unconcerned with plot or narrative and considers the finished pieces more akin material culture artifacts rather than illustrative art.
