About The Artwork

Mother Nature reveals herself in the majestic tapestry of plant life, creatures, storms, snow drifts, caves, dunes, fjords and wide expansive landscapes. She is etched in the fabric of moss, lichen, fungi, leaves and mildew. For decades now, Shoko Lee has embarked on sketching excursions to draw a funny looking tree in some remote part of the city which has still managed to avoid complete urbanization. The elements of nature fascinate Shoko Lee because of their seemingly random yet chaotic growth patterns that continue to surprise in fresh ways. Much like the uniqueness of every person’s thumbprints, Shoko seeks minute peculiarities that make each tree, rock crevice, leaf vein and gnarly root different. The series of line drawings bring attention to the underlying patterns of organic structure and abstractions. Shoko works from direct observations and whimsical imagination, interpreting what she sees in an intuitive manner. The final result becomes an inquiry into psychological space, teetering between the alien and organic.
