Okazaki Temple, Kyoto This sketch is part of a series I completed recently in Japan. This scene was at the front of a Temple where Omikuji, which are fortunes slips written on paper, were tied to a bush. It looked just like blossom standing against the red structure of the Temple at Okazakiiriecho. This original sketch is framed in a wide white wooden frame which has Artglass to eliminate reflections and glare.

Janet’s work aims to provoke a sense of emotion or an emotive memory of a past experience through her style of painting and use of colour. The abstract pieces are driven by impressions to her physical surroundings as well as life experiences, memories, feelings and also music. Her semi-abstract landscapes are usually derived from sketches and watercolours created en plein air. Drawing and recording a scene first-hand is both informative when later moving a quick sketch to be painted in oil on canvas but it is crucially important in capturing the mood at that particular moment. This is fantastic method to really seize the scene within its physical environment. These sketches are later interpreted into large oil paintings using bold colours and brush strokes to convey the image. Janet has always worked with watercolours along with pen and ink and when this style is translated to oil on the canvas you will also find the same movement and watery, translucent feel in this more traditional technique. Janet studied at Central St Martin’s school of Art & Design in London, UK which followed with an extensive career for 30 years within the Design and Interiors world. Janet was particularly involved in the colour schemes as well as the decorative accessories and artworks. She travelled all over the world discovering new artisans to create pieces for her Clients as well as buying internationally. This background has formed both a practical and aesthetic knowledge of the art world as well as Janet’s own work. When Janet finally decided to solely pursue her first love of drawing and painting, she still liaised with many Interior Designs on commissions for properties all over the world. These have mostly been for private large scale residential projects from the Middle East, North Africa, USA and Europe.
