About The Artwork

In this artwork titled “Organic Regeneration” I wanted to express the mystery of the natural cycle and the miracle of the regeneration, I mean the infinite alternation between Birth and Death. In order to express these feelings and this particular concept I used a female figure who seems being immersed in a sort of black water similar to a dark and torbid liquid which is highly metaphorical. The strange river or maybe a lake could be interpreted as a metaphor of our brain itself in the depth of our psyche. It could be seen as a sort of space in which our Mother Hearth operates by creating and recreating the conditions for a continous cycle of regeneration. The white leaves and the female body, enlightened by a sort of moonlight which is not directly present in the depicted space, appear suspended in the superior area of the picture making the dark background immaterial as a whole. When I was working at this drawing I was meditating about the story of Ophelia. Without doubts the death of Ophelia in a lake surrounded by waterlilies was a source of inspiration for this drawing. The abundant use of black colour and the decadent atmospheres combined with the possible reference to the myth of Ophelia constitute also an hommage to one of my favourite artists: Aubrey Beardsley He was an extraordinary interpreter of the elegant disquiet which was peculiar of the so-called “fin de siècle” dominated by the decadent aesthetics of the end of the 19th century.
