About The Artwork

Caught by halos the perpendicular arrow of focal capture is framed against a background of linear static... A contender for perpendicular form in antonymy could be a line, yet two lines comprise a major compositional element of perpendicularity. Hence, a curve is a more wholesomely antonymic form. What´s more, the ultimate manifestation of a curve would surely be the circle. The completion of the perfect curve is the perfect circle. So, it stands to reason that a compositional contrast of circle and right-angle is a contradictory, yet pleasing, paradox. Against, this paradox of balance, one can place yet another contrast: lines of staticity. Such jagged irregularity conforms to neither description by curves or the intersection of straight lines. In summary, the elements can be described by: 1) a background field of staticity of line, 2) a minor cascade of circles that; 3) capture the major opposite forms to a circle of: a) the major perpendicular form, and; b) the minor extension of form that is a straight line. In other words, both the straight line framed by the minor circle and the right-angle framed by the major circle are opposites. These combinations of opposites are superimposed upon yet another opposite in the form of a static background field. The result is balance through contradictory forms. More prosaically, it looks like a mountain in sunlight... However, I feel it necessary to say that this was another example of an inadvertent manifestation from the original design process. In fact during the entire execution of the piece the orientation in my mind was at 90 degrees to the here-presented orientation. It was just an abstract pattern. It was only upon completion that I thought to flip the object, and then noticed the arrangement in a more coherent orientation for the eye. I don´t really care which way up you put it, but I do hope you find it pleasing to the eye! Actually, I recommend obtaining an additional print that can be placed beside the original in a 180 degree rotation. This can be seen as the Mountain Peak/Mountain Pass diptych (see additional images for example).

16 years dormant; In my new residence at the time of Santiago de Chile; I found myself lost and confused without work yet with time on my hands. By chance, I stumbled across a set of archival ink pens. My thoughts are still not clear as to exactly what compelled me to buy them beyond the comparatively cheap price against that of my homeland Australia. At my parents in laws´ house, somewhat on a whim, I decided to draw a few lines to compare some pens sizes… I had trained to be a research psychologist, but couldn’t see the wood for the trees (or the deadline for the real matter) and my thesis had been a disaster. At a loss, drawing has given me the outlet for the obsessive diligence to method and detail that I had hoped to express in a research career. Failure can provide new freedom, and failure can give you chains: May the freedom be to pursue my art, and the chains of perseveration to a tendency of rigour drive my endeavours forwards! Each piece is painstaking and long in generation. Each piece in some way incorporates an extension of the methodology of forms of my earlier pieces: a novel base design incorporating repetition, iteration, and extension. All of my currently presented works are in simple black and white due to a desire to master the fundamental variables of my methodology. A haste to colour may fail the future by virtue of an overwhelming interaction of untamed variables that could cause a failure to reign in the building blocks of this generational form. Austere yet expressive, my assertion is that these works will complement rather than overcome a room that they may adorn. May you find them interesting in themselves and contributing to your beloved and important places of living!
