About The Artwork

This drawing is part of a book I illustrated, wrote and published with Thames and Hudson titled 'The Cranky Caterpillar' . The Cranky Caterpillar is available to buy on Amazon online and in most good book shops. Raymond Briggs, the author of 'The Snowman' reviewed the story as 'absolutely astonishing...an astounding piece of work' The Cranky Caterpillar is inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's study on visual sound, and looks at colour synesthesia, friendship and the power of empathy to transform. This particular drawing is the protagonist Ezra, looking behind the piano to see how it seems to be playing music by itself! The inspiration of this drawing came from a giant caterpillar assemblage sculpture i made. The sculpture is made from the insides of an old piano that I found in a derelict school in Hackney, London. This piano caterpillar sat on my wall for a few years before i decided it needed a story to go with it, which turned out good enough to published so I was pleased about that. More information on 'The Cranky Caterpillar' as well as many of the press reviews of the book can be found on my website www.mrmake.co.uk

Hello, I am British artist born in 1982, through my paintings, illustrations and sculptures, I am always making a visual narrative, exploring ideas on transformation, identity and our relationship to nature. Once I find an image or an object with the potential to make a character or express an idea, I start making a story, making drawings to bring the work to life, developing its creative journey. I like to think I am learning about myself when I make things - thinking through making. An example of this process is an oversized caterpillar assemblage I made from old piano parts, which later became the foundation for an illustrated story 'The Cranky Caterpillar', published by Thames and Hudson last year. I won the ‘State of the Art’ drawing competition at the Royal College of Art back in 2009, and have since exhibited at Phillips De Pury auction house, alongside group and solo exhibitions. I also have artworks in the Paul and Ellen Josewitz collection, as well as several public hospital collections. Most recently I have been working on a series of paintings as well as an illustrated art book titled ‘Mr Make & the Lemonade Lady’.
