VIEW IN MY ROOM
Drawing: Charcoal, Chalk on Paper.
One of a series of improvised compositions with pared down elements. A table place setting becomes a place, arena, event.
Informed by my love of Cotan, Zurbaran, Caravaggio, DeLaTour and vanitas painting; the simplified forms and their interplay with light I owe to Morandi.
Standing by the Taf estuary at Laugharne in the early hours, small dark clouds scudded past a full moon, its light sparkling on the eddies of water below. As the drawing grew, it seemed to take on some of the qualities of that night and I was drawn back to Dylan Thomas. My still life is both a landscape and group portrait of the cast in my own play for voices.
