In my recent past, I used to paint or to draw by employng a sort of “Caravaggesque” chiaroscuro. Sometimes I still use it in my current practice. I’ve always been attracted by this tenebrism and I’ve always attributed this to other things I love like photographic and cinematic images and sculpture too. The relation between the caravaggesque chiaroscuro and the usage of light in cinema stages and in photographic sets is evident. As regards the connection with sculpture what I meant is that in my work the usage of an extreme chiaroscuro has always represented an attempt to emulate in a two-dimensional support a sort of sculptural quality. What is important to me is that the subject represented is well defined and that the figures seem capable to go out of the invisible surface barrier characterizing a two-dimensional representation. The only way to create this effect is a strong “chiaroscuro”. Portrait of Giorgio De Chirico Graphite and pastel on paper 33x25cm 2010
