Reared in a family of Artists and Writers Long had a very culturally rich childhood which influenced him to follow the same pursuit. After University where he studied writing with Reynolds Price he moved to New York in order to begin his studies with the master drawing instructor Robert Beverly Hale and Frank Mason. In 1966 Long preempted the draft by enlisting in the US Marine Corp. He served two tours of duty as a Marine Combat Officer. During his last four months, he served as head of the Combat Art Team. After his Military Service, he continued his studies by serving an apprenticeship with a Master Painter and Fresco Artist, Pietro Annigoni. For 9 Years he studied painting and the difficult art of True Fresco.
