About The Artwork

Rhebuck. Watercolour and coloured pencil #drawing on cartridge paper. A drawing inspired by a tracing of original rock art in a cave in Drakensberg . Earlier in 2022, I revisited one of my ancestral homelands, the Drakensburg of Kwa-Zulu Natal, and whilst there, hiked the Drakensburg and looked at some Rock art. The artists, San "Bushmen" are long gone, at least as a distinct cultural group in the Drakensburg. These people, the Khoi-San, were the ancient first peoples of the southern tip of African and have become the victims of genocide perpetrated by black and white migrants, colonists and occupiers. I wanted to somehow celebrate and investigate these vanished artists. I tried some gestural expressionism with ochre powder and paint (also on Saatchi), but ended up wanting to pay quiet homage to the actual images left by the San. So I used watercolour and crayon and ground earth pigments to make drawings inspired by Patricia Vinnecombe's meticulous tracings of the originals. I stayed staying pretty close to the original, though drawing freehand. The original drawings use natural earth pigments, red and yellow ochre and mineral lime, and natural bindings from blood to aloe juice. Some of them are attentive to anatomic detail, others display abstraction, and a relationship between animal and man that Vinnecombe describes as spiritual. After #patriciavinnicimbe . #rockart #sanbushmen.

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
