Many critics consider Sam Spade, the character in Dashiell Hammett's novel The Maltese Falcon, to be the template for later "lone wolf" private detectives in crime fiction - the hard man with unbendable attachment to what is "just" and no sympathy for dishonesty, yet with a soft spot for a "dame" in distress. The character was brilliantly portrayed by Humphrey Bogart in the 1941 movie of the book.
