I explored San Gabriel for my series, "California Fool's Gold," in 2011. San Gabriel is a city in the San Gabriel Valley. I remember one day, the map -- which was then hanging on a wall -- was mysteriously wet. The compass rose is the Chinese character for "water" a reference to the San Gabriel River, which washed away the mission the Spanish built on its banks in 1776. I still don't know where the water that changed the appearance of the map came from!
