About The Artwork

The transparent and ephemeral large drawings that I have created for “SIC VITA TRANSIT” installation are inspired by my fascinating for the very ancient history of the Appian Way in Rome (Italy) and the symbols that have lived here during 24 centuries of life. The twenty large works are inspired by parchment scrolls and bear inscriptions citing epigraphs and epitaphs on the transience of life, taken on the Appian way from tombs and quotations of Latin poets. The material used is opalescent tracing paper, aniline, graphite and reinforced with acrylic medium. The color thus obtained gives the impression of ancient marble, yellowed by the sun. The four works can be hung flat, legibly on the wall or installed side by side in folds.

Born in 1949 San Sebastian, Spain, lives in Netherlands and France - Large Conceptual Installations - New projects each year - Light & heavy materials - Unconventional techniques developing works passing over the borders of sculpture and painting - Project books with special layouts - Active in many countries. My esthetic standpoint is based on the duality between life and death. Therefore in each of my projects I choose materials out of two types, either light translucent or heavy opaque ones. Among the first ones are light textile materials, as gauze, rice paper, tracing paper, organza, the second type includes lead, sea salt, wood, charcoal, porcelain and stone. I have developed my projects in the numerous places where I lived; they reflect my nourishment with the local cultures as well as the spiritual significance of the installation site. Six or seven process steps make up every project: from identifying the concept and suitable installations spaces, through the transformation of poor materials into poetic objects, to the final design and the production of books about the realization of the art work.
