ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sostre was a political prisoner in the USA in the 1960s and 70s. Owner of the Afro-Asian Bookstore that sold anti-war and Black nationalist history books, was busted for riot and selling heroin,in a vast cointelpro conspiracy to silence war critics. At the time, 1967, I was a student at the University of Buffalo, and became the first chairman of the Martin Sostre Defense Committee. My sketch captures Martin with his characteristic big smile.
