The Last King of Chitral; Part 1: Hunger ‘Twas the dawn of the anthropocene The year was twenty thirty With humans spreading like virus Leaving the planet dirty. Yet on remote mountains In a cave you wouldn’t find Lived Zavar the snow leopard Perhaps, the last of his kind. In snow leopard’s years He was only still puerile And he hadn’t seen his mother In quite a long while. For she had been taken By those ghastly human traps. Hidden beneath the snow, One step and they’d snap. Still just a dash too young To make a solo kill, He studied his mother’s stealth While perched atop the hill. One day some Markhor Were seen on nearby land His hunger forced him To go and try his hand He rolled over and rubbed his back Against the gravel grey This would camouflage his fur From unsuspecting prey. He spotted the herd’s young With whom he’d take his chance He crept up even closer In his mother’s crouching stance. His patient mother would wait for long And charge when she thought fit But hunger made the novice Make a hasty dash for it. The prey was too far When Zavar made the sprint His grumbling stomach felt Like the purse of a skint. He roamed about for a few days more And when he thought he’d die. The sight of 3 plump goats Suddenly caught his eye. He stole one of the three From a human village. And seemed overjoyed With his lucky pillage. So while he hunted and honed His skills of silence and stealth He seldom stole livestock To stay in good health. Their battle against extinction Was lost and forlorn. But the last of the kings of Chitral Fought well before being gone.
