About The Artwork

Outside is a lot of uncertainty and threat, inside in my atelier I am experimenting and playing with sjablones. First I draw lines imagening weeds, than I cut out the form and lay it on the table to paint it all black. When drying the paper strarts to curl. The daylight gives me nice shadows of the curled paper. This is the start of a new adventure with paper forms, colors, light and shadows. Layer after layer I catched new shadows on the paper. I catched them with my pencil. Not knowing where it would end there was growing a big kind of forest. First with clear colors and then soft colors and greys. The weed forms kind of exploded and filled the air with uncontrolled growth. But there grew also more regular and steady forms that can even give some shelter. Too much of them standing close together is scary and rather dark. Under the protecting roof of plant forms there is that little deer (paper collage), a bit puzzeled of what is going on. His nose tells him there is something in the air. This artwork comes with an international certificate of autenticity, signed by the artist. The artwork is framed in a white wooden deepened frame with glass.

Monique van Stokkum (1952) is a Dutch artist. Currently she makes drawings. THE DELICATE LINE Since 2015 I make drawings again. In the beginning of my artist careeer I started with drawing (ca. 1975), then a period of painting followed . And now I'm back to my old love. The directness, grim, tenderness and strength of the drawing. THEME Of course I am touched by what is happening in the world. In my work I do not react literally on the world news. Yet it is about universal themes in which people can recognize themselves. The viewer looks for elements of life. My work gets meaning through their associations and fantasies. Landscapes, animals and people are my sources of inspiration. Not strange for someone who is born and raised in the woods. I can now say that the death of my son (2005) brought about major changes in my work. Now, after more than 10 years, I feel the space again which was not there for a long time. Since 2013 I make my Objects to Remember. Large and small painted objects in wich memories may be stored. Works of art with an extra personal significance.
