About The Artwork

For the majority of (boat) refugees the journey to Europe is an epic undertaking, often setting out from a country in a state of war or revolution. Those setting out on such a journey often have no clear idea how it will end, or whether they will even survive. I reflects on these events and the further consequences of this resettlement issue. I've made a series of works with the main title "Table haute" (High Table) in reference to the French "Table d'Hôtes" that literally means "the host's table". The term is used to denote a table set aside for residents of a guesthouse (fr), who presumably sit at the same table as their host. These works "Table haute" are made from clementine crates who also made a migration from the south to the north. Every work has his own title and reflects on the different issue's of the resettlement. The work is not bigger than the bottom of the crate and hangs on the wall like a floating table (Table haute). In advance of making these works a sketch on paper with pencil and watercolour gives the first impression of the concept.
