Art Description

Drawing: Charcoal, Ink, Acrylic on Paper.

Jessica Kirkpatrick’s large drawing/ink painting installation is inspired by graphic novels and fresco murals. Using the principals of sequential art, Ancient Pain creates a quasi-narrative about a dysfunctional mask persona, which ceases to provide a working identity, is shed, then opens to the possibility for personal freedom. In the genre of memoir, this work draws on childhood wounds, psychological hang-ups and the yearning for connection. Employing motifs including mental health, aging, consumerism, feminine maternal space, disillusionment and transformation, this exhibit is really about LACK and DESIRE as a fundamental propelling force of existence and evolution.
