thinking about race relations and boxing someone asked me what does boxing have to do with race and my answer was what does it not have to do with race. the first heavyweight champion was Jack Johnson in 1910 who dated white women openly when there were laws that forbid anyone from doing so inter-racially. this prompted the US senate to pass a law called the mann act which forbid a black man from traveling across state lines with a white woman.
