About The Artwork

From "The Solace of Antiquity" series. The Propylaea of the Acropolis, Athens, Greece. Classical antiquity is omnipresent in Greece, woven into the cultural legacy of the country physically, psychologically and intellectually. It is an immense, epic, unavoidable, and at times, mysterious presence, mostly manifest through its architecture. This drawing project, started in July 2019, explores the themes of omnipresence, permanence/impermanence, and solace. Known as the monumental gateway to the temple precinct of the Acropolis, and build in the mid-fifth century BC, this structure was designed by the architect Mnesicles, The Propylaea continues to serve as both a real and symbolic gateway to Periclean Athens for the modern visitor. Countless people have passed through its columns since antiquity. Talking from field sketches and photographs in July of 2019.
