The temptations of Saint Anthony - #04 Drawing

This series of drawings deals with the subject of Disgust. I have been drawing one a year since 2012. As disgusting as even the idea of Disgust is, the breaking of its taboo manifests itself and is essential in the mechanism of human reproduction: you yourselves reading would admit that in intimacy you perform and desire disgusting acts. Disgust is a physical emotion that is translated into feeling, which is then rationalised, socially regulated and - in my interpretation - administered by various structures, including the Catholic Church. One of the churches' main tasks is to manage human “animality” - “sins”. Those who escape taboos by placing themselves outside the conventions (the rituals) are the insane and criminals. I was inspired by texts by Felice Cimatti (Philosophy of Animality), Maddalena Mazzocut-Mis (From Taste to Disgust. The Aesthetics of Meal), Virginia Burrus (The Erotic Life of Saints). Religions, with their rites, ennoble them and, if they cannot forgive them, at least understand them. I, in these drawings, try to aestheticise disgust: with unnatural flesh colours, the display of soft organs, mucous membranes and hundreds of female faces - the ‘human flesh’ par excellence, the obsession with it repetitive, pathological, without distinction of identity are the themes of my drawings. I have chosen unnatural colours to enhance the social sickness of disgust and my intention is to provoke in the viewer a meditation on himself and his relationship with the other.
