ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This drawing was inspired by the male figure in front of me. I pulled out an old silkscreen print of a grid study from my time studying design in Basel, Switzerland, which I primed with a wash of gesso and started working with my Sennelier oil pastels and my soft graphite sticks. These graphite sticks just glided over the oil pastels like they wanted to make the mark for me! Visually interpreting the male model, his warmth, his thoughts, his center, his space, and even the blood flowing through his body are all being channeled through the medium. This guy looked like an Armani man! When I draw, I invite the audience into the drawing through an implied line or an implied idea. I believe it gives a sense of gratification and accomplishment to the viewer who is invited into the drawing to finish the implied line with the perfect line that only that viewer can envision. The viewer, therefore, takes ownership of the image through this experience. What a gift a drawing gives when it invites the viewer to participate in finishing it!

2015, I retired and became a Professor Emeritus at Ohio University. I have been teaching Graphic Design, Drawing, Letterpress and Bookbinding at Ohio University for 25 years. I have traveled around the world several times conducting design workshops in the National Institute of Design, India, the Hong Kong Design Institute, Massey University, New Zealand, Virginia Commonwealth University, Qatar, University of the Arts, Philadelphia and the Basel, School of Design. I was a senior designer at The Upjohn Company, and a design faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design.
