ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Now showing at Kennedy Heights Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio USA. This is one of a series of profile drawings: started with a fascination for the profile portraits by Botticelli and other renaissance painters and materializing after turning to the internet through the pandemic lockdown and a need to contribute to a community’s voice. The mugshot was a clear choice for rendering the luminaries portrayed in this series of drawings. The drawings are done at a scale slightly larger than life as the individuals portrayed have now become, illustrating the activist's struggle and progress. Various means were used to render the drawings including small rubber stamps. The stamps can have a narrative role in the drawing such as a small telephone image used to add or subtract the charcoal on the paper's surface. Imperfections such as charcoal dust in excess and the paper’s manufacturer’s subtle crease lines are kept intact to further illustrate the dirty work of making trouble. 20% of the total price of this work goes to the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation or an appropriate beneficiary of your choosing.

The human condition is a boundless source for artful discovery. Art and music have always been at the center of my life. From childhood to a BFA from Miami university and some graduate studies at University of Cincinnati DAAP to this constant childlike fascination with the human condition. So, naturally the human figure is foremost in my work. No matter what direction the process takes, eventually it will return again to portraiture and then back again to exploration.
