UNACCEPTABLE Drawing

In these works, the inspiration came from the Byzantine and later Russian iconographic tradition. I used authentic techniques from the earliest stages of creating the artwork: first, I made the board from a log using only hand tools, then processed and shaped it. The next stage was preparing the traditional ground for icon painting - levkas, and finally, mixing egg tempera from natural pigments, which gives the works uniqueness and a special character that sets them apart from works created using modern techniques. But the main task was to emphasize the contrast with the subjects that I used for them. In the context of this artwork, provocativeness is associated with the open sexuality of the depicted women, which is meant to elicit various emotional reactions from the viewer depending on their personal beliefs, values, and life experiences. The topic of sexuality, especially in the context of same-sex love, is still taboo in some cultures and societies, eliciting negative reactions and condemnation from conservative groups. Thus, the artwork provokes controversial reactions from the viewer, both in terms of its subject matter and in terms of the choice of materials used to create it. The rusted metal used to create the artwork's frame creates a contrast between traditional techniques and materials and the modern narrative, which can be interpreted as a challenge to traditional views of morality and ethics, referencing outdated religious dogmas that taboo and regulate the sexual lives of modern individuals. These dogmas can also resist new ideas and changes, hindering the free expression of sexuality and self-expression.
