Dominique Vangilbergen (born in Belgium) lives and works in Berlin. His art delves deep into uncharted territory, exploring the ocean's bestiary, or setting a stage and implying narratives, leaving the spectator to interpret and imagine the dénouement. In turn, aesthete, architect, cultivator, curator, stager and pioneer, through his controlled, and sometimes obsessive, labour-intensive handling of a variety of media, he tames nature with deft, intricate, incisive strokes on rare and delicate handmade paper, foreseeing the future through a darkened glass, inventing new fictions with his own graphical, mark-making vocabulary. Sometimes using seemingly intentional smoke and mirrors to obfuscate the issue, but always working with aesthetic purpose. The overall effect is a personal Wunderkammer, home to myriad realities. What unites all of these works is an underlying major theme of epic grandeur, but the ultimate message is about life and man.
