Art Description

Drawing: Charcoal, Pastel, Pencil, Paper on Other.

I think the Asian Snowbird Cranes are so lovely and amazing. They represent beauty and nature and their purity and vulnerability. I am intrigued with certain definitions of beauty and perfection and our striving to achieve certain ideals. The birds represent a certain type of beauty and the need to constrain and bend to our will those ideals. The birds suffer for this and are contrived by being wrapped in more beauty - in this instance, sparkly crystals. They are then made to be tacky and less than.

I hope the viewer can sense this desperation for perfection and that it is a hopeless cause to tweak beauty.

I like to work with pastels because they keep the work loose and honestly, more fun for me. I like slight messiness of the medium and that it lends itself to imperfection as well. The crystals are the proverbial icing on the cake, the cherry on top, if you will.
