ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I love drawing movement and started to use the horse as model alongside my figurative work around 3 years ago. This drawing, from my ongoing series of horses in motion, features a horse free jumping, a snap shot of time when it leaps to clear an invisible fence. By depicting the horse in monochrome, without colour, it focuses us on its physicality and the lack of background gives us a strong negative space which adds to the composition. The drawing is made on gessoed wooden panel and is fixed and varnished so there is no need to frame behind glass. This means that it is ready to hang and it can be viewed without any obstruction, as if you were viewing an oil painting. This gives us a sense of speed, power and weightlessness. I hope that the viewer gets a sense of forward energy and freedom from this work.

Through drawing and painting, Patsy McArthur deals with various themes in her work but in many of the images, there is a common feeling of strength and liberation. She often strives to make images that convey a sense of power and energy or potential energy. Patsy McArthur was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1976 and studied at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, winning the Royal Scottish Academy John Kinross Travel Scholarship on graduation. Since then she has lived and worked in Florence and Barcelona where she completed a Masters Degree in European Fine Art in 2001. She has exhibited widely throughout the UK and internationally, and in recent years has had solo shows in London and Geneva as well as participated in art fairs throughout the US and Asia.
