About The Artwork

original pen and ink drawing / no. 001 in my confections series ━━━━━ I create with the hand of an architect and the heart of a computer scientist. This commingling of worlds - sometimes chaotic, sometimes sensible - result in intricate pen and ink drawings that are almost always done completely freehand, and rarely with an overall composition in mind. These pieces are a visual window to a constantly branching inner monologue, embedded with tiny glimpses into the realms of physics, topology, cryptography, the design and destruction of systems, and human fallibility. With a fineliner pen and tiny strokes of mica pigment, I sketch out speculations on what might happen when these domains collide. Chance versus intention, methodic versus mania, the analytical and the absurd - what is found within the in-between?

Jenny Guan was born in Shaoguan, China. As a first generation immigrant growing up within Silicon Valley, she cultivated an appreciation for logic and systems through frequent trips with her mechanical engineer father to electronic stores and robotic laboratories. These early explorations of the magic that happens when one puts the right pieces together in the right order carried over into a decade long career as a practicing architect, and later on, as a co-founder of predictive analytics startup. The experiences and knowledge of this multidisciplinary path provides a continuous funnel for her body of artwork, resulting in intricate pen and ink drawings created with the hand of an architect and the heart of a computer scientist Jenny received her Bachelor of Architecture from California College, where she later taught drawing and digital fabrication as a member of the design faculty. She currently lives and works in San Francisco.
