rapunzel • violet clippings_01 ink on vellum the rapunzel drawings: These drawings were inspired by the story of rapunzel and related tales also containing the eden complex. In this visual retelling of rapunzel, I pulled the elements of color and material (hair) out of the story to create abstract ink drawings. They were made by washing ink over cut hair on vellum. After the ink dries, I remove the hair to reveal the drawing. This project began with a drawing titled #selfie, a self portrait in hair and ink. I was inspired to begin looking into stories about women and their hair. I began with the story of rapunzel, a story familiar to me from my youth. As I looked into related stories a more complete picture of a woman began to form. It occurred to me that stories of persona scattered across the earth are separated only by nuance, language, place and perspective. I began contemplating the similarities in our experience of life and self-hood. I considered how categories imply separation and otherness. What began as a look into definitions of womanhood told through tales, turned into a contemplation of how self is defined. The questions arose: whose story are we acting out in our lifetime? What defines self: physical boundaries? actions? impressions? deeds? thoughts? features? read the original story of rapunzel and related tales: https://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0310.html

I am a multidisciplinary Artist working and living in Maine, USA. My work combines experimental drawing technique with new media applications. Purpose: To visually explore and communicate my internal experience of form, place, identity and time. I often work under the moniker, maud ink. I was given the name maud by a friend when she set me up with my first social media account. I kept it. I liked the freedom of working under a pseudonym. It helped detach me from my own persona and opened me up to exploring undiscovered aspects of myself. I saw a glimpse of the boundless-nature of self. Read more on my artist site: www.maudink.com
