About The Artwork

Geophysiology is the study of interaction among living organisms on the Earth, operating under the hypothesis that the Earth itself acts as a single living organism. The Gaia theory implies; there is no longer any need to consider the evolution of the species separately from the evolution of their environment. The two processes are tightly coupled as a single indivisible process. Success also depends upon coherent coupling between the evolution of the organism and the evolution of its material environment. As expressed by James E. Lovelock My Gaia series explores our conscious accountability to the earth. Gaia of course is the personification of the earth or the ancestral mother of all life. ‘Alesco’, derived from Latin, translates as ‘I rear’ or ‘I increase’. Therefore Gaia Alesco suggests ‘earth’s growth’ or implies the nurturing of earth as a mother would her child. It’s all to obvious humans take their mother for granted and long-term unsustainable exploitation has resulted in crisis becoming the new norm. The symbolism in the Gaia series is not without reason. They represent a very certain sardonic irony. Both crows and doves are considered amongst the most intelligent of earths creatures and yet both are derided as pests. Crows, loud, rambunctious, are most often associated with a long history of fear and loathing. While considered pests by farmers especially they in fact provide a valuable service to people by eating insects and carrion. They help keep our environment healthy and clean, especially in and around urban areas. Research demonstrated crows are actually very social and caring creatures, and also among the smartest animals on the planet. Known for their intelligence and adaptability they are known for their problem-solving skills and amazing communication skills. The irony of course lies in the similarities between crows and humans. While we consider ourselves the most intelligent of creatures, despite our 'intelligence and adaptability, problem-solving skills and amazing communication skills', we remain so ignorant and destructive in so many regards.

Adrian Owen is a self-taught artist who specialises in fine art, portraiture and illustration, saying he has "always preferred the tactility of traditional mediums and a hands-on approach to fine arts." While working in traditional mediums such as watercolour, acrylic and oil, his preferred medium is charcoal which suits his highly considered and emotive work and highlights his meticulous attention to detail. "I enjoy the malleable textures of charcoal’s palette and find it can be almost fluid.” It was in London during the 1990's as a young man that he began to develop his distinctive style of portraiture, sketching portraits on Leicester and Trafalgar Squares and during this time that he made an annual appearance on The Royal Mile at The Edinburgh International Arts Festival. On returning to South Africa he participated annually at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. A trip to Chiang Mai in 2007 introduced him to the dry brush technique which he adopted to expand his mastery in the disciplined art of charcoal drawing. Adrian freelances commercially as an illustrator in the publishing, advertising, film and television industries as well as being commissioned by architects for perspective renders and developers for conceptual designs. Private portrait commissions and works focusing on his unique interpretations of the human form have remained a staple during his career and can be found in homes and private collections throughout the world. His work has been exhibited in notable galleries throughout South Africa. He has been a participating artist in the Spier Arts Trust and Nando's Creative Block since 2017. Adrian currently lives and works in Kommetjie near Cape Town.
