About The Artwork
When making my large scale drawings, a collision occurs between articulated rendering and impressionistic elements. I try to create subtle stretches in the boundaries of realism to evoke a sense of multiple realities, a liminal space that includes dream and consciousness. For this piece I was inspired by Waterhouse's depictions of sirens and mermaids as well as Fragonard's "The Swing".

Becca Shmuluvitz graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2014. She was the 2013 recipient of the Morris Louis scholarship, awarding her 22,000 dollars. Her work has been exhibited at The Dress Shop gallery in Brooklyn NY, Area 405 in Baltimore MD, and the Escola LLOTJA in Barcelona. She now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
