About The Artwork

If you know anything about being Australian you will know about the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. This event takes place once a year at Oxford Street. This charcoal/pastel drawing successfully uses colour to highlight the vibrant nature of the event. However, the artist also contrasts vibrant colour with a sad, almost confused Gay man in the artwork, also, his body language highlights his need to protect his identity. One could say the artwork is a social commentary on what it means to be a gay, lesbian or even transgender in Australia being, in Sydney, it is celebrated in parts of the city but at the same time still seen by the public as something to be ashamed of. Overall this artwork gets us thinking about Sexual Identity.
