AT WHICH HIDE THAT WHICH HIDE IN THE DARK Installation art (Charcoal drawing, wisdom teeth, wooden frame, glass and hidden space) Someone once told me that each work of art has multiple interpretations. What the artist wanted to express with it, is just one of those interpretations. (This is mine) Dissection of an art piece This piece is about what we hide. That which we do not show to others. That which we do not want to see but which is there, in the darkness. Always there, always latent. Size: 89.76 ft. x 54.33 in. x 3.94 in. These dimensions have the intention to stablish a confrontation with the viewer. Both by the size of the work and by how it is arranged in the gallery (against the corner). Because of this, the work imposes its corporeal and visual presence in that space. At the same time, it also creates a hidden space between the intersection of the walls and the back of the work. Drawing: The look on the face is one of of emotional turmoil, which is directed towards the viewer and emphasizes the confrontation. The drawing is intentionally realistic. Almost compulsively detailed so that it feels more like flesh. It shows pores, pimples, imperfections, scars, hairs, etc. in order to make you feel the fleshiness of the person portrayed, which in this case, it’s me. Darkness: Here, darkness does not serve as emptiness, but rather as where what is hidden remains. The face is immersed in the density of the darkness. This speaks of what can be seen, what is shown versus what is hidden. Of that which peeks from the darkness. Wisdom teeth: The teeth are related to my previous work. I’ve been working with Death as my subject. With what remains, with what we leave behind. Not as a love for thanatic themes, but as a means to recognize ourselves as finite and to take advantage of living without turning our backs on death. In that sense, the molars are remnants of my body, removed and which that will not return to me. The molars are also hidden in the darkness of the mouth. Sentence: The phrase "THAT WHICH HIDE IN THE DARK ... HIDES WITHIN YOU, WITHIN ME" refers to what we, each and everyone of us, hides. That we all hide something or that we all have something that is hidden inside us (Usually, things we considered negative). The letters themselves are black on top of a black background, which intentionally make the reading a lot more difficult. Glass and frame: Glass on top of a dark background, makes the reflections and the lights of the gallery make it difficult to see clearly the image at a distance; nonetheless, when you get closer, the projection of your body on the glass allows you to cancel the reflections, allowing you to observe the elements of the work clearly. This alludes to the idea of having to get closer in order to se things in their real dimension so you can understand them or, perhaps, face them. The depth of the frame also makes it a kind of "Reliquary". Where the biological element (hair, bones, teeth, etc.) are treasured as someone’s remnants.
