About The Artwork

Devil’s Peak, Cape Town, Western Cape. Charcoal, conté crayon and chalk pastel on 350gsm grey chipboard Size: 77 x 102cm Not an indigenous species, although non-invasive, the Umbrella Pine (Pinus pinea) are scattered in groves around Cape Town’s Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak. Unfortunately, when they reach a certain age, they tend to simply fall over, due to their shallow root system and high winds. I guess then that local authorities tend to have them felled to preempt a potential hazard to hikers/runners/mountain-bikers in the vicinity. The gnarled bark of these downed trees falls off after some time, leaving the smooth, silvery wood to the elements.
