About The Artwork

I sometimes explain what I do as visualizing the verbal. I do the drawings that accompany articles, essays, op-eds. Sometimes it's images that compress the idea of a book onto its cover. This kind of invention begins with somebody else's ideas but exercising the metaphorical muscles forces me to have my own ideas, and, as in this case, sometimes those ideas are vague or hard to put into words. Hence the title I pinned on this drawing, which is a pun on the title of a film by Tony Richardson, based on a story by Alan Sillitoe, which I've never read. The practice of collage takes two dissimilar things and combines them. I drew the IBM-Selectric type-ball first, then married it to the figure of a running man. The Selectric was one of the first everyday devices to have an internal binary code, but all we saw (and heard) was the ka-ching of its operation and the magical way words and sentences appeared via the gymnastic globe jigging around where the fantail of letters used to catapult onto the empty page. Now it's all ethereal and silent––the sound of my MacBook keyboard is similar to a box of Chiclets. What does it mean? You tell me. Forcing the viewer to make sense of something makes things more meaningful, or that's what they say. It's an interesting image, an interesting metaphor, even if it is insignificant. Ka-ching!
