Website address: Born and educated in Warsaw, Barbara Levittoux-Swiderska studied painting and tapestry at the Academy of Fine Arts .Both disciplines have constituted paralell ways of her artistic expression. She is one of the artists who transformed the craft of tapestry from the flat decorative textile into an avant-garde discipline that concerned itself with unique spacial installations, woven or glued together from imaginatively used materials, both natural such as fibres of hemp or wool and man-made ones:wires, plastics and industrial scraps. Artists from across the borders organized plain-air workshops which were riotous creative events resulting in unique,on-site body of work. Barbara has exhibited widely in and outside Poland: in Switzerland,France,Germany,Sweden,Hungary,U.S.A and many other countries. She participated twice in the International Bi-annual Exhibition of Tapestry in Lausanne and was singled out for a distinction in 1982 at the Erfurt Quadriennale of Arts and Crafts. In 2010 Barbara received a life-time award for the achievements in the field of this particular discipline: the one-of, unique-issue artistic tapestry. Presented here is one of the most unique, uncompromising, coherent and essential artistic visions that I know of. Initially my Mother didn't want me to put her pictures up for sale: " there is no point showing them, she said, they are so very un-commercial".Under dread of contradicting - her pictures are the designer's dream. Minimal and intimate, their presence infects the space around with quiet light, projecting luminosity and reassuring Apollonian order . A good painter doesn't paint better, she paints differently , said someone in the know, and this piece of wisdom is very much about the work of Barbara Levittoux - Swiderska.
