Exposed Reality Installation

"˜In the world there are either isolated objects or a physical void........ The perceptual "˜something' is always in the middle of something else, it always forms a part of a "˜field'. Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology of Perception. "˜The otherness of the image the subject assumes in the mirror stage creates a negative dimension in the subject's existence. I am never, in Lacan's model, fully "myself" because the relationship within which my ego, my "I", comes into being is a relationship with an image that is not me, that is an unattainable ideal. "˜ Martin Heidegger, Between Good and Evil. My work explores the fragility of the human psyche and perception. Through the placement of physical interferences within natural landscapes, it develops metaphors to mimic emotional sensations experienced during episodes of depression or isolation. Moreover, it formulates a visual language influenced by psychoanalytic theories, such as Jacque Lacan's "˜mirror phase' and Gaston Bachelard's concept of the relationship between the "˜external physical architecture' and "˜the internal thought'. There are three threads, which are developed and run throughout my work: an interest in the malleability of materials, the observation of elemental forces, and how these can be captured to evolve a sensual and emotive visual for human-experienced states. Ultimately, through film, print and sculpture, my pieces build to evoke a sense of mental blocking, numbing and disconnection from a known world.
