This is not just a simple cabinet of curiosities At first glance, the work of Tales Sabará is a cabinet of classic trivia, of travel souvenirs. It makes you think about window displays of natural history composed of ethnographic pieces, rare, unique, unusual things, collected when traveling to faraway places, in order to publish a scientific work. It is the myth of the great explorers, of the adventurers ... When we observe the objects TS collected, we can see, among others, an alarm clock, a cup of coffee, petanque balls, Asian chopsticks… These objects, collected during his travels, are memories of cultures and people he met, memories of moments. Often aged by time, they are here, placed in an old cupboard together with his drawings, hanging from the cupboard and inside it. They also seem to match encounters and episodes of his life. By emphasizing a physical detail, an attitude, they show the essence of the persons. These benevolent portraits emerge, then, as the treasury guards. A treasure composed of objects of everyday lives, diverted from their utilitarian function to be presented to our gaze. From now on, they are part of an installation. In an exhibition, we see them differently. Every shape, every detail makes sense. Even if Marcel Duchamp insisted on the impossibility of giving a definition of the ready-made in 1929, André Breton gives a definition in his Dictionnaire abrégé du Surréalisme: “an usual object promoted to the dignity of art object by the simple choice of the artist”. Regarding his installation, TS refers to the cabinet of curiosities by replacing the curiosities with ready-mades, which leads me to wonder about the reason of such choices. Will it still be possible, today, to display curious objects? Could they look as amazing as before? At a time when communication networks, industrialization and fashion reduce the uniqueness of peoples, we can state that there is less originality among the ways of life, cultures and concerns of inhabitants of large cities, countries and continents, than in the Golden age of the cabinets of curiosity. Modernity has smoothed the differences. Preserving the differences is a wealth. This work of TS resonates in me as an anthem of wisdom and humanity. It tells us that the encounters, the exchanges and the sharings are essential notions for us as a society, and we need to preserve them. Text by Arthur Toqué (curator of La Maison Rouge, in Paris)
