About The Artwork

In the delicate light installation LIGHT\TRACE No. 1, fibre optics are embedded in white, handmade paper and gently trace their light over the entire surface. The transparent, fine fibre optics subtly emit their light and the viewer’s gaze is lost in the superimposed fibre optics. Which both diffuse their light and draw it very clearly. This counterplay creates optical depth and ever new impressions. As a viewer, you can feel the magical atmosphere, lose yourself in the many lines of light and immerse yourself in this unique installation. The individually partially processed fibre optics are inserted into multi-layered paper so that they emit their light inhomogeneously over the surface. The paper, made from the bark of the mulberry tree, is so fine that individual fibres are easily recognisable. A translucency and soft feel characterise the paper. The depth of the installation is created on the one hand by the scattering of light between the individual layers of paper. On the other hand by the coating of the surface with palladium. The precious metal additionally creates small light reflections even when unlit during the day. Therefore, the light installation is also clearly visible in daylight without being obtrusive. Because the fibre optics leave their contours in relief in the fineness of the handmade paper, an equally interesting surface texture is also created. The interplay of all these factors gives the light installation LIGHT\TRACE No. 1 its poetic effect.

Creating a magical poetry of light with subtlety is the challenge of every light object and every light installation of my light artworks. Because the desire to work with spaces and, above all, to breathe atmosphere into them is my greatest motivation. As an light artist, coming from design and interior architecture, I combine art, architecture and design in my projects. A play of translucency and lightness begins with every object in the material. I love creating volume with light without obstructing the view. I break the light down into its individual parts and put it back together again: The sun and LED are the light sources, the fibre optics are transmitters and the material becomes the body. Using the light in a subtle way so that it leaves delicate traces in interior spaces is made possible by the manually processed fibre optics, which form the heart of each handmade light object. In the objects themselves, this creates a sparkle, a dance, a magical interplay of lightness and translucency. In 2015, I founded ATARA design. As a German artist and designer, I live and work in Vienna, the city that constantly inspires me. I love to travel for inspiration, especially to faraway countries. Transformation is my central theme here, because combining different techniques and materials from different areas and cultures and placing them in a new context has fascinated me since my childhood.
